📝 Do you copy? Copywriting for non-copywriters

September 15, 20222 min read

Marketing your brand is full of wide-ranging and time-consuming jobs.

One of the hardest of these jobs for some can be copywriting.

Here's some quick-hit tips to help you focus on writing succint, focused copy - quickly.

Be convincing.

In social and in ads, you're potentially hitting a completely cold audience - someone who has never heard of you, or never seen the need for your product.

Use the following tips to laser-focus your copy on convincing a customer to engage - and ideally purchase - from you.

✒️ Use short sentences

Don't waste time and space with filler words. Keep your copy TO-THE-POINT. Particularly in ads and social posts, copy such as:

  • This razor's five high-quality blades give you the smoothest shave.

Can easily become:

  • Five quality blades for the smoothest shave.

✒️ Shorten with punctuation

Symbols such as hyphens (-) and slashes (/), not to mention the good old 'vertical bar' ( | ) can replace words and also break up your text for better impact:

  • Five blades | High quality | The smoothest shave

✒️ Use numbers

Another way to break up your copy and increase impact is with number symbols rather than written numbers. Traditional writing practice would say write those numbers out as text, but not in marketing!

  • 5 Blades, 1 razor. The smoothest shave.

✒️ Lean into actual data

People respect data much more than opinion. Especially when it's coming direct from the brand themselves. Get positive data and use it to prove your point.

  • 5 Quality blades - "the smoothest shave" - rated by over 30,000 men.

✒️ Keep it simple

Dont' use acronyms or jargon. People have little time to try and work out what it is you're saying. Use simple, understandable words, and use as little of them as possible as long as your point is clear.

Go through this list of tips every time you write!

Practice these tips enough and eventually it will become an automatic process. You'll be able to turn on your 'marketing mind' every time you sit down to write copy!

  • Descript for transcribing audio and video into text, also includes tools to remove filler words such as 'um', 'er', 'you know'

  • Duolingo ABC is a kids spelling app but, according to their founder, is used by adults simply to practice the basics

  • BKA Content is a service using professional writers to create written content based on your brief.
