Here's How To Really Use ChatGPT for Marketing

Here's How To Really Use ChatGPT for Marketing

March 03, 20233 min read

You knew i was going to talk about it eventually… here it is - my take on ChatGPT!

You might wonder why I'm so late in finally writing about this? Well, we have been finalising our digital advertising course, but we’ve also been evaluating and gathering feedback from others on ChatGPT and how they’ve been using it.

Here's our key observations ⤵️

🧠 AI is said that in many ways its intention is to mimic human thinking and understanding. But, like humans, it’s also prone to misunderstanding.

We recently worked with a brand who operate in a very niche market - Heat Collectors for Water-Source Heat Pumps.

They don't make the heat pumps, and they don't make heat collectors for air-source or ground-source heat pumps. Very specific.

When asked to write some website copy, ChatGPT starts well, but then starts to get confused, explaining ground-source and air-source heat pumps.

ChatGPT

Don't feel the particular need to read ALL of this (unless you're really into Heat Collectors)

📊 What about statistics and data? Only up to certain date - and again, misunderstanding...

ChatGPT does not contain any statistical data after the end of 2020, so any numbers you're provided with may not be up to date.

What is useful however is that ChatGPT's answers are formulated from everytihg it knows or can find out.

Think of it as doing the google search  for you, reading all the results (although it scans it's own sources), then forming an opinion based on all those results. Which is what we do every day (except likely only from a handful of results). This saves your time, but just ensure you're not relying on 100% accuracy.

I asked the same question twice, so ChatGPT apoligesed for any confusion! It's courteous...

📝 ChatGPT's copywriting skills are good... not great

At Digital Marketing Pro, we strive for high quality in our work. Particularly in writing. And quite simply, you won’t get high quality writing from ChatGPT.

We focus on high impact ad creatives and copy. Ask ChatGPT to provide ideas for ad creatives or copy options and the results will be a little… mundane.

ChatGPT

We asked it to write ad copy for the board game 'Risk'.

ChatGPT

We also asked for some copy options for Beats Earphones.

The above suggestions are good - but not great.

This is because it lacks two of the most amazing human traits of all:

  • 😲 Inspiration

  • 😏 Disruption

☝️ This is the real unlock of ChatGPT

It can not be inspired itself, but it does trigger inspiration and disruption in YOU.

It can provide a range of starting points that can kick off those incredible human traits to produce something impactful and jarring - and that's what great marketing is.

Quick Tips

🗣️ Talk to it like a human - it actually responds better than simplifying your question, like you might be Google.

💬 Your interaction is literally a chat - so you can respond to it's answers. Ask it to 'shorten that text', or 'make it funny'

📃 It works really well at reducing or summarising text. Paste your text into the chat and see how well it can summarise!
